I think this article was very revealing of the blur that remains about the real impacts of social media like Facebook on the marketing strategy of your business. Many questions have not clearly been answered yet. Among the main questions, the expected ROI with these new tools. While it is hard to defined, more and more tools are being developed to help hoteliers calculate the digital marketing's financial benefits. Still, what they have to understand is, as Edward said, that developing a community takes time. Before earning a profit, you need to build trust with your followers and then, rewards of your efforts will not only be financial, or not directly... (image, reputation, targets etc). Money is thus not the only criteria to take into account.
RépondreSupprimerAnother belief is that setting up a Facebook page for your business is easy. It is clearly true. What is not, and that many professionals forget, is how developing and taking care of your community. The way to adress people, to share valuable contents and even the tone to adopt on your page is not obvious. You have to combine marketing knowledge and social media knowledge. Hiring the right people is then the key to succeed.
To conclude, I have an opinion a bit different from Edward's. For me, even if social media is only at the begining of its possibility, it should not be considered lightly. It is a marketing tool as valuable as the oldest ones and you should always try to follow and even guess the trends. For instance, using social media for loyalty programs or using LBS are a good example of what the opportunitires are with these tools.
